Rockstar Games Launcher: "Unable to launch game, please verify your game data"

Fixable on your PC

Unable to launch game, please verify your game data

The launcher found something wrong with the game files, or couldn't access them. Verifying the files usually fixes it. If not, it's typically permissions, antivirus, or a broken settings folder.

Why it happens

Before starting a game, the Rockstar Games Launcher checks the game's files. A file damaged by an interrupted update, quarantined by antivirus, or locked by OneDrive or missing permissions makes that check fail.

How to fix it

  1. Verify the game files. In the Rockstar Games Launcher: Settings > select the game under My Installed Games > Verify Integrity. On Steam or Epic, use their verify option instead.
  2. Check your antivirus quarantine for game files, restore them, and add the game folder to your exclusions.
  3. Make sure the game isn't installed inside a OneDrive-synced folder. If it is, move it to a normal folder like C:\Games.
  4. Close the launcher, right-click its shortcut, and choose 'Run as administrator', then try again.
  5. Install pending Windows updates and update your graphics driver, then restart.
  6. Reset the game's settings folder: in Documents\Rockstar Games, rename the 'Red Dead Redemption 2' folder (or 'GTA V' / 'GTAV Enhanced') by adding '.old' to the end. Don't delete it. Your saves are in its Profiles folder, so you can copy them back into the new folder the game creates.

Still broken?

Do a clean reinstall of the Rockstar Games Launcher, choosing to keep your game files when it asks. See the related fix below.
