FiveM: "Server requires a newer game version" / game build mismatch

Fixable on your PC

game build mismatch

Your copy of GTA V (or FiveM itself) doesn't match the game version the server is set to. Usually fixed by letting FiveM and GTA V update. If the server is the one that's behind, only its owners can fix it.

Why it happens

Every FiveM server picks a specific GTA V game build to run. If your GTA V or FiveM files are older than that build, or your FiveM install is damaged, you can't join. If the message says the server is running an older version, the mismatch is on their side.

How to fix it

  1. Fully close FiveM (check Task Manager for leftover FiveM processes), then reopen it so it can finish any update.
  2. Open Steam, Epic, or the Rockstar Games Launcher and make sure GTA V is fully updated. Launch GTA V on its own once, let it reach the main menu, then close it.
  3. Verify the GTA V game files in your launcher.
  4. If FiveM still won't update, clear its cache: delete the 'cache', 'server-cache' and 'server-cache-priv' folders inside FiveM Application Data\data, then reopen FiveM.
  5. If you see 'Could not find game executable', reinstall FiveM from fivem.net. Your GTA V install is not touched.

Still broken?

If the message says the server is running an older game version, or every other server works fine, tell that server's staff. They need to update their server's game build setting.
